Yi (“suitable”) and Ji (“avoid”) key off the day pillar and name traditional activities. Same date, same list — regardless of zodiac or Day Master.

Peng Zu: folk one-liners

Peng Zu taboos pair one line to the day’s stem and one to the branch — e.g. a Jia day may read “do not open storehouses” and a Zi day “do not consult divination.” They share the screen with Yi/Ji in folk almanacs (通胜) but are not the same table.

Chart apps speak of unfavorable elements from birth pillars — personal. Almanac “avoid travel” and Peng Zu “do not consult divination” are public labels. Do not merge them with “avoid Fire, wear less red” on a gift card.

Search forums for “luck pillar” and you get threads mixing birth chart, flow year, and today’s color tag into one blurry “luck” bucket. In classical BaZi vocabulary they are different layers. This page defines 大运 (Dà Yùn), often translated luck pillar or great luck cycle: the roughly ten-year stem-branch periods that roll through your life after your four birth pillars are fixed.

Beginners who only know the zodiac animal are looking at one branch of the year pillar. Luck pillars sit between that fixed birth map and the fast-moving flow days.

What a luck pillar actually is

Each luck pillar is a stem-branch pair (天干地支), same building blocks as your birth pillars. Software prints a timeline like:

• Ages 4–13 → pillar A
• Ages 14–23 → pillar B
• Ages 24–33 → pillar C
• … and so on

The starting age and direction (count forward or backward through the month pillar sequence) depend on gender and the yin/yang of your year stem, rules codified in Ming-Qing almanac traditions. Different apps may round start ages by a year; treat timelines as approximate labels, not legal contracts with fate.

Practitioners read how each ten-year pillar interacts with your Day Master (日主). Recognizing “entering a new Da Yun” on a relative’s app screenshot is enough for most conversations.

Luck pillar vs flow year: the mix-up

• “Luck pillar replaces birth chart.” Birth pillars stay; Da Yun is an overlay timeline.

Classical charts often show eight to ten blocks (roughly 80–100 years). Apps truncate for UI.

Do I need luck pillars for a zodiac necklace gift?

No. Year-animal jewelry is L0/L1 symbolism. Luck pillars matter when someone already uses a BaZi app and speaks Da Yun vocabulary.

Is Da Yun the same as “annual luck”?

Colloquial “annual luck” usually means 流年 (flow year). Da Yun is the slower decade container that flow years sit inside.

Three time slices: 流年 · 流月 · 流日

Your Day Master (日主), the stem of your birth day pillar, is where I start reading the chart — not the whole palette by itself. Flow pillars are moving weather against that anchor. When Fire is strong in a flow year and Fire is already your favorable element, I lean into fire tones; when Fire is an unfavorable element, the same year calls for restraint — that is the same 喜用神 judgment, not a second “flow year layer.” Software summarizes the interaction as element emphasis (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). L1 almanac day vs L3 flow day (do not merge them)

Example: the almanac might mark a day as Yi for travel while your flow-day tag leans Metal-neutral gray inside your favorable-element palette. Both can be true. They answer different questions.

What match flow actually computes

When you enter birth date, time, and (optionally) place in match flow, the pipeline roughly does:

1. 1 Build four pillars

   Year, month, day, hour stems and branches.

2. 2 Derive favorable elements

   Which phases serve as 用神 / 喜神 vs 忌神 in your profile — Day Master is the entry, not the only color rule.

3. 3 Overlay flow pillars

   Current year, month, and day branches against your chart — same 喜用神 line, adjusted for that year’s or day’s push.

4. 4 Emit wearable tags

   Metal-forward silver, water-dark navy, earth camel, etc., as symbolic color emphasis inside favorable elements.

From flow reading to something you can wear

There is one color logic: favorable elements from your four pillars. Flow year, month, and day only shift emphasis inside that line — they do not add a separate “flow year color board.”

Practical rule: month-level shifts beat day-level shopping sprees. Nobody needs seven new bracelets because seven flow days favored Fire — unless Fire is already in your favorable elements and you are rotating small pieces, not buying a new palette each day.

Stay on sun-sign or year-animal gifts. Do not cite her flow day; you lack the hour pillar. Use birthday bundles or five element colors instead.

Run match flow. If Water is favorable and reads loud this season, a navy tote + dark merino scarf is a coherent story. Card line: “Your chart favors depth blue this season — not because the almanac said so.”

Daily enthusiast checking flow 流日

Use flow day as a small swap inside your favorable palette: socks, cord, coin charm on a bag ring. Pair with L1 almanac literacy, not replacement.

Does flow year add its own color layer on top of 喜用神?
